Wooley Bugger hackle feathers?
What type of feather/hackle should I use if I’m tying a wooley bugger?
Rooster saddle hackle in the size and color you’re tying. This will have long, “fuzzy,” hackle with more webbing than dry fly hackle. Marabou, saddle hackle, and chenille, in matching or coordinating colors, is all you really need for Buggers. Add a bead head or weighted body, maybe some tail flash, and some contrasting hackle for a little variation. Also, you can use peacock herl instead of chenille.
I like saddle hackle that is fairly stiff and bristly. I want it to be webby and fuzzy so it will sink, but I want some stiff quills in there. This will make better “pulses” in the water. Wooly Buggers will often be fished in deep water and/or low-light situations, so you want to make sure that the Bugger can get noticed by water movement as well as by sight. Some big stiff hackles right at the head will move the water and give out a good pulse on a jerky retrieve.
