Walleye Crappie
If you are going to be trolling out on a lake, plugs such as crankbaits are an excellent choice of walleye fishing lure. Since plugs are made to sink in the water, they will be located at depths where they will be found by their targets.
One reason why trolling is so popular is because instead of focusing on one area for an extended amount of time, you can move from area to area and concentrate on spots where the fish are biting. Trolling for walleyes is particularly effective because it allows you to keep your bait in the water for a period of time long enough for them to study your bite and decide if they want to bite. Walleyes are picky when it comes to eating and will not make the decision to bite right away. By trolling with your plug and twitching your rod at certain intervals, you can help pique and keep a potential strike’s interest.
Crankbaits are a popular type of plugs that are often used in walleye fishing, especially when trolling weedbeds. If you decide to focus on a weedbed, troll the area in a back-and-forth fashion. One mistake anglers tend to make when trolling crankbaits in weedbeds is using monofilament fishing line. While it is possible to catch fish using monofilament line, braided line is a highly superior choice for this angling situation. Braided line does not stretch in the way that monofilament does. If you have been trolling crankbaits and have been having trouble setting your hook, try switching to a braided line.
Walleyes will be most attracted to a crankbait with a wide wobble, so select a plug that is long and thin, as opposed to a shorter and squatter bait. Chubbier crankbaits will help you when you are bass fishing, but walleyes generally do not go for a tight wobble.
