Worm Ewg

Today we will talk about jerkbaits, commonly used in colder waters for a variety of fish. There are three major types of jerkbaits. Suspending, Floater/Divers, and Soft Jerkbaits.
Soft Jerkbaits are exactly that, soft bodies baits made to be jerked around shallow cover, docks, and other cover that would hold bass. These types of baits are usually rigged using a worm hook and sometimes a swivel. Rod choices are 6′6″ medium action with a baitcaster using 8-12lb test line, but can be thrown on spinning tackle also. The larger bodied lures should be used with a EWG worm hook to allow maximum hookset. When fishing these lures the idea is to cast past the cover you are fishing and pull the lure back to the cover with slow twitches. I have found that by using this lure in clear lakes you can see fish actually come up and take the bait, so always keep your eyes on the lure and the location around it. If you see or feel a bite, wait a few seconds before setting the hook, you really want to wait until the fish turns away from you before you set the hook.
Floater/Divers are usually lightweight wood or plastic lures made to be fished on or near the surface. The basic principals from the soft jerkbait are the same, cast the lure around shallow cover using a slight twitching motion to make the lure dart from side to side. The rod choice is a 6′6″ light action using 8-10lb line. The key is not to over work the lure, try to find a rythm and stick to it.
Suspending jerkbaits are weighted versions of the floaters that allow the bait to be pulled down into the water and stopped which make them suspend, or hover in the water column. This type is deadly in cold water conditions, when bass become suspended around underwater cover. Tackle for this type of lure would be 6′6″ – 7′ rod in the light action category using 8-12lb line. To fish this lure the principal is to again cast past your target work the bait in and then stop the lure. Allow the bait to sit anywhere from a few seconds to a minute. If you feel a bite with this lure it’s a bit different, you don’t want to set the hook but rather simply lower the rod tip and reel in tight simply causing the fish to hook itself.
